THINKING ERROR! Negative Thoughts Must Be Controlled!

THINKING ERROR! Don’t Do It!

A THINKING ERROR (a.k.a. Cognitive Distortion) is defined as an irrational and negative thought, which leads to negative feelings and ultimately bad behavior. Thefore, conventional wisdom of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy suggests that if you identify your Thinking Error at the moment you create it, you stand a much better chance of recognizing negative thoughts patterns and you will be better prepared to make alterations in your currently destructive behavior.

While this is all well and good, and it can work, the flip side of this coin is that nearly every thought you have has the potential to be categorized by somebody else as a Thinking Error! And if that other person has legal authority over you, then they are presumed to be correct and your disagreement may have legal ramifications. This argument in itself could be viewed as a Thinking Error! And your reaction to that statement could be a Thinking Error! Oh, look, you just had another Thinking Error! Which one are you having now?

Anger – Even though you might feel like you’re just expressing yourself, this is a way to manipulate other people, and therefore, it is classified as a Thinking Error!

Blaming – Avoiding problem solving by placing the cause with someone else, which is a display of resentment and anger. That’s a double Thinking Error!

Lying – By providing incorrect information, leaving out important facts, or behaving in a disingenous manner, any attempt to confuse or distort reality is a Thinking Error!

Excuse Making – By providing reasons for, rather than acceptance of, a circumstance for which you are accountable, you are avoiding responsiblity and engaging in a Thinking Error!

Entitlement – Believing that you implicitly deserve something without it being earned is a Thinking Error!

Low Frustration Tolerance – If you “can’t stand” something, that is a Thinking Error!

Labeling – Any thought that any one thing belongs to a certain group is a Thinking Error!

Emotional Reasoning – “Feeling” something is true, regardless of contrary evidence, is a Thinking Error!

Awfulizing – Asking “why” and focusing on what happened rather than a solution is a Thinking Error!

Assuming – Believing something without checking facts is a Thinking Error!

Minimizing – Down playing the serious nature of any situation is a Thinking Error!

Justifying – Explaining things the way you want them explained is a Thinking Error!

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Essentially, any negative thought you have is a Thinking Error! If you don’t like the president, Thinking Error! Don’t like your neighbor? Thinking Error! How about your boss? Thinking Error!

So…what happens when Thinking Error violations become laws like speeding tickets? And the police have scanners that can read your thoughts? Are you for that? Is that a Thinking Error, I detect?

Have Fun!
